Joining a finance broker network is a significant decision.
The right network should give you the structure and support to build your own business, but it is worth looking beyond the headline claims before committing.
If you are comparing networks, these are five questions we think are worth asking.
1. What Support Will I Actually Receive?
Most networks talk about support, but the important question is what that looks like once you are up and running.
Can you speak to somebody when you are unsure about a case? Is compliance support available? Will you continue to receive guidance after onboarding?
At Rural Finance, our brokers have access to compliance support, onboarding, ongoing training, broker systems and our head office team.
You are building your own business, but you are not expected to work everything out alone.
2. What Does the Lender Panel Look Like?
The number of lenders matters, but so does the type of business they are willing to consider.
A useful lender panel should give you options across different sectors, assets and circumstances.
Our brokers have access to more than 30 funders across agricultural, commercial and asset finance.
That does not mean every case will have a solution. Good broking starts with understanding the client properly before considering the options available.
3. What Happens When a Case Is Not Straightforward?
Not every enquiry arrives neatly packaged.
Information can be missing, circumstances can be unusual and sometimes you simply need another opinion before deciding what to do next.
This is where the support behind a network becomes particularly important.
Before joining, find out whether you can discuss cases with the team, ask compliance questions and get guidance when something falls outside the ordinary.
Within Rural Finance, our brokers have access to the wider team when they need that support.
4. Can I Build My Own Brand?
If your aim is to create a brokerage of your own, this should be an important consideration.
When you join Rural Finance, you can operate under your own business name and branding while working as an Appointed Representative within our network.
That means you can develop your own presence and client relationships while operating within an established regulatory structure.
For many people, that balance between independence and support is one of the reasons a network model makes sense.
5. Do I Understand the Commercial Arrangement?
Never be afraid to ask detailed questions about money.
Before joining any broker network, you should understand the costs involved, how commission works, when you are paid, what the contract includes and what happens if you decide to leave.
Our commercial arrangements are discussed during the joining process so that prospective brokers can understand how the structure works before making a decision.
If something is not clear, ask. You are making a business decision, so you need the full picture.
It Needs to Work Both Ways
Choosing a network is a two way conversation.
You need to decide whether the network suits the business you want to build, while we need to understand your experience and background.
Ideally, we are looking for people with three or more years’ experience in the finance industry. If you have less experience but believe you have relevant commercial knowledge, we would still encourage you to speak to us.
The first conversation is about understanding whether there is a good fit on both sides.
What Do You Get with Rural Finance?
As part of our network, brokers can operate under their own brand while benefiting from access to more than 30 funders, compliance support, onboarding and regulatory checks, ongoing training, our broker portal and support from the head office team.
The aim is not to run your business for you.
It is to give you an established structure from which you can build it.
